2nd July, 2008: PURFORM of New Zealand the world’s largest selling plastic mannequins brand – known internationally for pioneering the concepts of mannequins today announced its entry in the burgeoning Indian Retail & Fashion Industry. Purform has entered into an exclusive Marketing, Technical & Manufacturing Agreement with OK PLAY INDIA LIMITED - India’s leading plastic molding company. As per the long term agreement between both the companies, OK Play will manufacture & market Purform range of mannequins in India, while Purform will provide the technological support to the Indian partner. This agreement is in addition to another long term off-take agreement between both the companies, whereby Purform will shift its entire production to OK Play in India & outsource its requirement for the international markets from them.
Announcing India entry of PURFORM, Mr. Maurice Purdy, Managing Director, Purform said, “India has been ranked 2nd by AT Kearney in a Global Retail Development Index of 30 developing countries and with close to 12 million retail outlets the country has one of the highest retail densities worldwide. Under such circumstances, it becomes one of the most lucrative markets for any international brand to be present here. Purform being the largest selling international brand has already a standing in the Indian market also, so we decided to harness the vast potential that Indian Retail/ fashion & Apparel market offers."
Commenting on the tie-up with OK Play India Ltd, Mr Maurice elaborated, "After Purform decided to enter the Indian market, we were on a look-out for a local partner and OK Play was the obvious choice for various reasons. The association with OK Play is like coming together of two like minded companies with the objective of leveraging each-other’s strengths. A strong manufacturing base with a high technically competence pan India distribution network are OK Play’s major strengths and availability of these two from day one is a wining proposition for any international brand trying to set its foot in the Indian market. OK Play also has the much-desired experience of high quality plastic rotational moulding and manufacturing of state of the art products. All these factors make OK Play an ideal choice for PURFORM as its partner in India.”
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rajan Handa, Managing Director, OK PLAY INDIA LIMITED said, “It’s a momentous occasion for us as we are entering into a relationship with the world’s largest selling plastic mannequin’s brand. The fast increasing purchasing power & the appetite of Indian consumer for apparels & fashion products offers vast potential for PURFORM products in India and we are confident that the strong fundamentals of the PURFORM brand supported by our strong distribution network across the country will replicate PURFORM’s international success story here in India also.”
“Mr Handa further highlighted, “We will manufacture the entire range of mannequins here in India, with PURFORM providing us the latest technology & moulds etc. Our engineers will be working with PURFORM’s R & D team to adapt and customize these products suitable to the Indian as well as global markets.”
The outstanding features of all this mannequin is set out in the following points.Durability: Compared to existing market products which are made of fiberglass. They won’t damage, break or chip and don’t have to send for repairs. Making for quick & easy dressing within the store. All the materials used are 100% recyclable.
Our mannequins are light weight and maintenance free which makes them more durable and long lasting. They need not to be replaced very frequently there by saving retailer’s investments in buying new mannequins frequently. This gives better return on investments to our customers.
Commenting on the huge potential of the mannequins business in India Mr Handa disclosed, “Over the past couple of years there have been sweeping changes in the general retailing business, mainly in apparel retailing, which once a strictly made-to-order market for clothing has changed to a ready-to-wear market and mannequins are an integral part of today’s apparel retail business. More than 50% of the bigger players in the retail segment in the coming years are apparel and lifestyle brands who are our target customers.”
As the retail sector is booming, the spotlight is slowly shifting from the product to the place of action where the art of visual merchandising starts and mannequins come into the limelight. According to market studies done by OK Play, in today’s scenario mannequins are the most successful sales format for retailers & helps in increasing sales by a minimum of 10 -30%. OK PLAY will initially manufacture over 20 different types of mannequin to suit the requirements of the retailers - Full length (Male/Female), three fourth (Male/Female), Kid mannequins and also a variety of body sections -Heads, legs, hands and just torsos are made and can be customized to cater to the needs of a specific clothing display.
The Indian Retail Industry is estimated to be around USD 180 billion and expected to touch USD 450 – 500 billion by 2010, out of which organized retail, which is 3% of the whole retail industry currently, is in turn pegged to grow to $64 billion by 2015 from the current size of US$ 7.5 billion.

Despite these modest beginings Austin developed a reputation for quality and new ideas and made the company grow exponentially. His son Maurice and grandson Benjamin continue to introduce new innovations and technologies into the global mannequin market and Purform is today the largest manufacturer of plastic molded mannequins in the world.
This includes the move away from fibreglass to rotationally moulded high density plastic resulting in one of the world's most durable mannequins range. These are not only tough but also stylish in their simplicity. Many aspects of the retail buyer’s behaviour have been incorporated in their design in order to optimise display impact and maximise apparel sales.
